Sodium Methoxide (Powder)

Sodium Methoxide (Powder)

Sodium Methoxide Powder (CH₃ONa) is a white to pale yellow solid with strong alkalinity and high corrosivity. It is highly hygroscopic and reacts vigorously with moisture or water, releasing heat and Hydrogen gas, so it must be stored in tightly sealed containers in a dry environment. Its density is approximately 1.0–1.1 g/cm³ and its melting point ranges from 185–190 °C. Anhydrous Sodium Methoxide is fully soluble in water and Methanol, forming a homogeneous solution, but addition of water or other solvents should be done with caution.

Sodium Methoxide powder is widely used as a demethylation and methoxylation agent in organic synthesis, as a strong alkaline catalyst, and in the production of biodiesel, methyl ethers, aromatic and heterocyclic compounds. It is also employed in Claisen, Aldol, and other base-catalyzed reactions.

High-purity Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic Soda) reacts with anhydrous Methanol to form Sodium Methoxide. The resulting solution is then dried using controlled heating or industrial vacuum techniques, ground to a uniform particle size, and packed in tightly sealed containers to protect against air and moisture. The powdered form of Sodium Methoxide is more suitable for reactions that require precise dosing, long-term storage, or minimal solvent use.

The product is highly corrosive and moisture-sensitive. Appropriate protective equipment such as gloves, goggles, and protective clothing must be used when handling. In case of contact with skin or eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water. The product should be stored in a cool, dry environment, away from heat, flames, and oxidizing agents.
