Potassium Methoxide Solution (CH₃OK) is a clear to pale yellow solution in Methanol, widely recognized as a strong catalyst and methoxylation agent in chemical industries and biodiesel production. This product exhibits high reaction rates and is fully miscible in water and methanol, playing a key role in the production of methyl ethers, aromatic, and heterocyclic compounds. The solution typically contains 25–30% w/w active Potassium Methoxide in anhydrous Methanol and, due to its strong alkalinity, effectively catalyzes Claisen and Aldol reactions.
In industrial production, high-purity Potassium Hydroxide (Caustic Potash) reacts with anhydrous Methanol to form the Potassium Methoxide solution. The resulting solution is then filtered, packaged, and stored in moisture- and air-resistant containers to protect against moisture and oxygen, making it ready for fast and reliable use in industrial reactions.
Potassium Methoxide solution is highly corrosive and moisture-sensitive. Appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves, goggles, and protective clothing must be used during handling. In case of contact with skin or eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water, and store the product in a cool, dry place away from heat, flame, and oxidizing agents.
