Sodium Methoxide (Solution)
Sodium Methoxide (Solution)
Sodium Methoxide Solution (CH₃ONa) is a clear, colorless liquid with a characteristic Methanol odor, possessing strong alkalinity and high corrosivity. This product typically contains 29.5-30.5% w/w Sodium Methoxide in Methanol and may include trace amounts of water or Sodium Hydroxide. Its density is approximately 0.9–1.0 g/cm³, and its pH is highly alkaline (above 13). The melting point of dry Sodium Methoxide is around 185–190 °C, and the boiling point of the solution varies depending on the Methanol content, which itself boils at approximately 64.7 °C.

Sodium Methoxide is widely used as a demethylation and methoxylation agent in chemical synthesis, a strong alkaline catalyst, and in the production of biodiesel, methyl ethers, and aromatic and heterocyclic compounds. It is also employed in organic reactions such as Claisen and Aldol condensations and other base-catalyzed reactions.
Sodium Methoxide solution is generally produced by the reaction of metallic sodium with dry Methanol. In this process, Sodium reacts with Methanol, releasing Hydrogen gas and forming Sodium Methoxide:
This reaction must be carried out under dry, moisture-free conditions, as water can react with Sodium Methoxide and decompose it. After the reaction, the solution is carefully filtered and packaged to prevent contact with air and moisture. Sodium Methoxide solution is produced without additional drying and offers easier handling, making it ideal for fast reactions, simple dissolution, and direct use in industrial chemical processes.
The product should be stored in a tightly sealed container in a dry, cool environment, away from heat sources, flames, water, and oxidizing agents. Due to its high corrosivity and the flammability of the solvent, any contact with skin or eyes must be immediately rinsed with plenty of water, and inhalation of vapors should be avoided with proper ventilation. Observing safety precautions and using appropriate protective equipment is essential when handling this product.
